OSPD Goes Green
Ocean Springs, MS – The Ocean Springs Police Department is making less of a carbon footprint by using solar panels to power speed indicator signs. Thanks to an upgrade by the city’s Public Works Department, the six 2 ft. x 3 ft. speed calculators, displayed on a LED board, are completely powered by the sun.
“Chief Cothern came up with the idea to replace the batteries we were using because of their short life span. So, we’re burning less energy by going green,” explained Capt. William Jackson, OSPD Traffic Control and a 13-year veteran with the force.
The six solar-powered speed signs are currently used in each ward throughout the city, rotating in location from week to week. Capt. Jackson recognized that the speed signs have many benefits.
“The speed signs make drivers aware of their speed, especially when they take the same route everyday – driving may become more of a routine and the driver is less alert to the speed of his car,” Capt. Jackson explained. “The more alert the driver is, the less accidents. We do not have fun giving out citations.”
