Ocean Springs Adopts Bicycle Suitability Plan

Ocean Springs, MS – In an effort to promote Ocean Springs as a bicyclist and pedestrian friendly community, the Mayor and Board of Aldermen recently adopted a Bicycle Suitability Report by the Gulf Regional Planning Commission.  The report, funded in part by the US Department of Transporation, Federal Highway Administration, Federal Transit Administration, and MDOT, identified roadways in Ocean Springs that are best suited for cycling.

According to the report, the majority of streets in Ocean Springs rated good to average providing an ideal environment for an experienced commuter and recreational bicyclist.  Ward Avenue received an excellent rating because of its low traffic volume, good surface condition, width of street, maintained yards for safe retreat, and street lights.

Members of the Gulf Coast Bike Club and the city’s planning department worked with Gulf Regional Planning Commission to establish criteria for assessing the roadways, developing a survey, and finalizing the review of the process.

“This study helps us prioritize investments in making our city streets safe for pedestrians and bicyclists,” Eric Meyer, Community Development and Planning Director.

the survey criteria used to evaluate the roadways included speed limit, shoulder striping, roadway widths, traffic accidents, street lights, and other issues affecting the safety and comfort level of the bicyclists.
