Louis Chosen for Dreyfus Community Service Award and Youth Council Scholarship
Ocean Springs, MS – Ocean Springs High School graduate and Mayor’s Youth Council member Deetra Louis has been selected to receive the 2009 Tommy Dreyfus Community Service Award and Youth Council Scholarship. The $1,000 scholarship fund will be used to pay college tuition.
Miss Louis was chosen for her recent work with the Mayor’s Youth Council subcommittee “Triple Threat,” a teen advocacy group that brought coast-wide awareness to the state’s teen pregnancy rate. Miss Louis was also instrumental in establishing a mentoring program for 8th grade girls at Ocean Springs Middle School. While serving on the Mayor’s Youth Council, she logged over 60 hours of community service including volunteer hours at the City of Ocean Springs Parks & Leisure Services, the Rotary Pancake Fundraiser, the Peter Anderson Festival, and assisting in all city events.
“There is no better way to make a difference than to dedicate myself and time to something worth changing,” said Miss Louis. “I enjoyed community service, because it makes me feel like I am making some kind of difference in this world.”
The Tommy Dreyfus Community Service Award and Youth Council Scholarship was established in December 2008 to honor Mr. Tommy Dreyfus, founder of United States Marine, Inc. of Gulfport, MS. Mr. Dreyfus was well known for his patriotism and generosity to citizens on the Coast.
The scholarship was presented at the July 7 City of Ocean Springs Mayor and Board of Aldermen meeting by Mr. Dreyfus’ son and USMI CEO Barry Dreyfus. The City of Ocean Springs Mayor’s Youth Council is one of approximately 45 Mayor’s Youth Councils in the state of Mississippi.
