Hurricane Preparedness Expo Set for May 30

Ocean Springs, MS – Gulf Coast residents are encouraged to participate in the free Community Hurricane Preparedness Expo on Saturday, May 30, 1 p.m. – 4 p.m., at the University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast Research Laboratory, 703 East Beach Drive in Ocean Springs.

Key note speakers for the event include:  Carolyn Nelson, Area Coordinator for Mississippi Emergency Management Agency;  Major Chad Gibson, Hurricane Hunters and Kenneth Graham, Meterologist in Charge, National Weather Service of Slidell, Louisiana.  A representative from the Mississippi Insurance Department will give a discussion on wind pool insurance issues.

More than 20 experts on a wide range of topics for hurricane preparedness will give information on: storm surge, crisis management, tropical weather prediction, home preparation, tree stress, special needs issues, and weather data collection.  In the computer lab, citizens will have access to GIS, online preparedness planning, personal inventory preparation and electronic documentation.

Organized by the City of Ocean Springs, the May 30 event is funded through the Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant Consortium and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Coastal Storms Program.  Event organizers would also like to thank Chevron Products Company of Pascagoula for its donation.
