Earth Day Celebration and Activities Set for Ocean Springs

Ocean Springs, MS – An Earth Day community-wide picnic and ecology-friendly activities are scheduled for Saturday, April 17, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m., at Little Children’s Park, Washington Avenue, downtown Ocean Springs.  In the event of rain, the picnic will be held Saturday, April 24, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Sponsored by Delta Sanitation, the picnic of hamburgers, hotdogs, soft drinks and/or water, and snowballs are provided free of charge to all who attend.  Water and soft drinks are provided by O’Charley’s Restaurant and Allen Beverages.  Food is provided by The Shed and New York Pizza.  All food and prizes are supplied on a first come, first serve bases.  The event is sponsored in part by Community Bank, The Shed, Humane Society of South MS, First American Printing and Direct Mail, and Waring Oil.

In addition to the picnic, Delta Sanitation will provide a giant inflatable recycling truck for entertainment and the Eco-Maze for exploration.  The life-size maze is designed to teach recycling awareness as participants navigate their way through the maze.  Five recycling-themed games will be offered to children at the event.  Prizes will be given to all participants. 

The Ocean Springs Fire Department will be on site with a ladder truck and a robotic fire truck, “Patches and Pumper.”  In addition, the American Heart Association will be on hand providing children’s temporary tattoos and information to help community members “clean up their health.”

Prior to the event, Delta Sanitation spoke to third graders at 18 schools in Jackson County about Earth Day and the importance of recycling.  An Earth Day art contest will take place in all the school visited.  One winner will be slected from each of the 18 schools.  Ultimately, a grand prize winner will be selected with the winning student receiving a $500 donation for his or her school and pizza party for his or her class.  All artwork will be displayed at the Earth Day event at the Eco-Maze.
