City to Celebrate Arbor Day by Giving Away Trees

Ocean Springs, MS – On Saturday, February 20 at 9:30 a.m., city officials and the Ocean Springs Garden Club will celebrate Arbor Day by giving away trees following a brief ceremony at the Ocean Springs Civic Center, 3730 Bienville Boulevard.

Parking for the event will be to the rear of the Civic Center; handicapped parking is available in front of the Civic Center.  Trees will be distributed following a brief indoor ceremony.  Seed packets and planting information will be distributed by the MS Renaissance Garden Foundation, Inc. on a first come, first serve basis in the Civic Center foyer.

The indoor ceremony will feature a memorial tree and plaque dedication for: John Blossoman, Gloria Moran, Rev. billy fisher Rutrough, Clarence A. Hamilton, Jr., Tony Gagliano, Michael D. Jones, and Stephen Bond.

The ceremony will conclude with tree planting tips from city arborist, Murville Alleman.  Following, the tree giveaway will take place outdoors on a first come, first serve basis for Ocean Springs residents until 1:00 p.m.  Only three trees of the three gallon size will be given per household.  Citizens should prepare for appropriate transportation of the 5 – 7 ft. trees before arriving.  Tree species available are:  Bald Cypress, Live Oak, Pecan, Southern Magnolia and Red Maple.  Bare root trees are also available to the public. 

The Ocean Springs Arbor Day Celebration is sponsored by Land Trust for the Mississippi Coastal Plain and Replant South Mississippi.
