City Prepares for Approaching Storm
Ocean Springs, MS – The City of Ocean Springs issued a proclamation affirming the existence of a local emergency due to Tropical Storm Ida. The proclamation allows city departments to begin discharging their emergency responsibilities as stated in the City Emergency Operations Plan. By declaring the existence of a local emergency, the city may provide for the health and safety of the citizens and the protection of property.
City officials have authorized the opening of the Emergency Operations Center, which will be manned during extended hours by trained staff. Citizens may call with their storm-related questions and concerns at 228-818-4438.
Current forecasts predict extended periods of rain fall with flooding in low lying areas. Free, self serve sandbags are available in the Ocean Springs vicinity at the following locations: West Jackson County Fire Department on Big Ridge Road, Latimer Community Center on Daisy Vestry Road, West Road Department on North Washington Avenue in St. Martin, Fontainebleau Fire Department on Highway 57 south, and Fort Bayou Fire Department on Seymour Lane.
Citizens are advised to bring in lawn furniture, garbage cans, and other outdoor items that may restrict drainage in the area or become projectiles in the event of windy conditions. Scheduled garbage pick-up for Tuesday, November 10 has been cancelled. Delta Sanitation will resume garbage pick-up on Wednesday, November 11.
School has been cancelled for all schools within the Ocean Springs School District for Tuesday, November 10. The Ocean Springs Parks & Leisure Services After School Camp will also be closed on Tuesday. The Jackson-George Library System closed today at 5 p.m. and is scheduled to reopen tomorrow, Tuesday during normal business hours.
