City of OS Registers Over 600 Voters for November Elections
Ocean Springs, MS – The City of Ocean Springs registered over 600 new voters during the month of September. City officials believe the unprecedented number of new voters reflects the interest of the upcoming November 4 elections.
“It is unusual for us to register so many voters,” said Marie Starr, Deputy Tax Collector and Voter Registrar with the city. “Although it is too late to register for the November elections, citizens may register for future local, state and federal elections.”
According to the official web site of Delbert Hosemann, MS Secretary of State, citizens of the United States who are at least 18 years of age on or before Election Day, may register to vote at least 30 days before the election they intend to vote in with the appropriate identification.
The Mississippi Voter Registration form requires a Mississippi driver’s license number. If the citizen does not have a MS driver’s license, he or she may provide the last four digits of his or her social security number.
If the citizens wants to register by mail, he or she may fill out a MS Voter Registration Application available at www.sos.state.ms.us or 1-800-829-6786. If the citizen has never registered to vote in the county he is currently registering in, and he does not have a driver’s license or social security number, he must send with his application, either a copy of current and valid photo identification or a copy of a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck or other government document that shows the name and address of the voter. If the person registering does not provide the requested information, he may be required to provide the items to election officials the first time he votes at a voting place or by absentee. If you are a Jackson County resident interested in voting by absentee ballot, contact Joe Martin, Circuit Clerk at 228-769-3178.
If you are a resident of Ocean Springs, a citizen of the United States and 18 years of age or older, you may register to vote at City Hall, 1018 Porter Avenue. Although not required, a form of identification with a current address helps city employees assist new voters with appropriate polling locations based on municipal boundaries.
False registration is a felony with a penalty for conviction of false registration resulting in imprisonment for not more than five years or a fine of not more than $5,000 or both.
