City of OS Receives Improved State Fire Insurance Rating
Ocean Springs, MS – Ocean Springs residents may soon see a reduction in their homeowner’s insurance thanks to an improved fire insurance classification by the Mississippi State Rating Bureau. The improved rating for the city is a direct result of improvements in the city’s fire department, recent increases in water capacity and water pressure, and enforcement of building codes.
“This is definitely a team effort,” said Fire Chief Jeff Ponson. “Because the Mayor and Board of Aldermen allowed us to hire more fire men, in addition to funding improvements in the water system along with the purchase of the new ladder truck, all of these things contributed to our improved rating. These improvements are not just a part of my tenure, but rather the foresight of former fire chiefs Mark Hare and Pat Williams.”
Significant improvements in the city’s water distribution system contributed to the improved state rating, as well. These improvements include: a 500,000 gallon water tank on Pine Drive, the addition of a 400,000 gallon tank at Sunplex, the raising of the Civic Center and Halstead tanks by 62 feet for increased water pressure, the placement of 25 – 30 additional fire hydrants, and the placement of 12″ trunk lines, totaling over four miles, in selected areas of the city.
“There are many city employees who played a part in the improved state fire rating,” said Public Works Director Andre’ Kaufman. “The potential insurance savings for citizens, including current and future businesses is welcomed news.”
The enforcement of building codes are also a part of the state’s review of the city’s rating. Specific construction, occupancy, private protection and exposure from adjacent buildings are criteria for rating.
“Most citizens are not aware that the degree to which building codes are enforced effects all types of insurance. Every department in the City is involved with facilitating that enforcement in some way,” said Terry Agar, Building Official with the Department of Community Development and Planning.
