Ocean Springs, MS – At tonight’s Mayor and Board of Aldermen meeting, the Board awarded bids to GM&R Construction Co., Inc. and Gulf Construction Co., Inc. for total construction cost of $6,592,680 for the city’s first public safety center.
The Ocean Springs Public Safety Center will encompass two facilities totaling 38,500 square feet, located adjacent to the Ocean Springs Civic Center at 3730 Bienville Boulevard. The center includes a police station, jail and court complex, fire station and emergency operations center. A police presence will remain in the downtown area of the city.
GM&R Construction Co., Inc. of Bay St. Louis, MS will build the Fire and Emergency Operations Center with the awarded bid of up to $2,682,066. Gulf Construction Co., Inc. of Gulfport, MS will construct the Ocean Springs Police Department, Jail, and City Court complex with the awarded bid of up to $3,910,614. The Ocean Springs Public Safety Center is designed by Bolton Lack Furr, PLLC.
“Our police officers and fire fighters have waited a long time for a comprehensive, quality center to serve our citizens,” said Mayor Connie Moran. “The Board of Aldermen and I are proud to bring this facility to the center of where most of our growth is occurring on the east side of town.”
Funding for the Public Safety Center is provided by a Community Development Block Grant, Hurricane Katrina Community Revitalization Grant through the MS Development Authority, the 2% tax levy on food and beverage, and city funds. The Public Safety Center is expected to be completed by winter 2010.
