Ocean Springs Releases Unified Development Code Draft

Ocean Springs, MS. –The City of Ocean Springs has released the latest Working Draft of the new Unified Development Code (UDC) which will replace the current Zoning Ordinance Code and Subdivision Regulations that were first adopted in 1984.  The UDC will update, streamline, and clarify these land development regulations while incorporating lessons learned and current development and regulatory issues.

The UDC is a land use ordinance that combines a variety of development regulations and procedures into a single unified code.  Elements of the UDC include but are not limited to: Zoning and subdivision regulations; development review procedures; landscaping and design standards; storm water and floodplain management; roads and sidewalks; utility standards and the public approval process for development.

The goal is two-fold:  bring development standards up to date to better reflect the current needs and growth patterns of the city, and to eliminate contradictions, provide clarity, streamline process and information flow to improve understanding and use for both staff and the public.

Mayor Dobson said "The current code is extremely out of date.  Amendments over time have created inconsistencies and even contradictions on some issues.  We look forward to providing the working draft UDC for review and to taking this large step toward a code that is more transparent and easier to understand and use.”

A stakeholder group composed of city staff and local professionals in related fields continues to review both the existing code documents and the Working Draft UDC that was not completed following review in 2013.

Public hearings will be scheduled following initial review and those meeting times will be advertised.  City residents and those that do business with the City are encouraged to review the Draft UDC and participate in the review and approval process.
