Ocean Springs, Miss. – The City of Ocean Springs is partnering with the Mississippi Gulf Coast Youth Health Coalition and others to pilot a community wide program to encourage and assist the citizens of Ocean Springs to adopt a healthy lifestyle.
This 8-week weight loss challenge is designed for the "health seekers” – the average person who is striving to figure out how to jumpstart their fitness journey. These participants will be weighed in at the YMCA during the week of February 29 and set a personal weight loss goal with the assistance of qualified YMCA trainers. At the weigh in, Singing River Health System will record their weight, BMI and blood pressure.
The participants will then receive a packet with exercise and nutrition information with a daily activity calendar. This daily activity calendar will include demonstrations and nutrition programs that are offered during the 8 week program, including local fitness club events. Local vendors at sports related activities will be invited to participate and include offers.
"We are really excited about the Let's Go Gulf Coast Lighten Up OS program!” said Joey Conwill of the Mississippi Gulf Coast Youth Health Coalition. "It's about the community coming together to promote a healthy lifestyle. "
The final weigh-in will be April 30 at Fort Maurepas during the YMCA’s Healthy Kids Fit 4 Life event. All participants who reach or exceed their personal goals will be added into a drawing to win prizes.
"This is an exciting opportunity for our residents and families to have easy access to prime facilities and events to make healthy choices," said Mayor Connie Moran. "The city of Ocean Springs intends to pursue a designation of a healthy workplace within the Let's Go! Gulf Coast program, and we invite other local businesses to join us in this challenge.
"I personally pledge to lose 1 pound for every 1,000 residents within our city limits by Labor Day – which amounts to 17.5 pounds," said Moran.
This pilot program has been designed by Let’s Go! Gulf Coast and will be done first in Ocean Springs. If you have any questions on how you can get involved, please call the Mayor’s Office at 228-875-6722.
